Nasal Polyp

Nasal Polyp (Nose Polyp)

Nasal polyps are transparent, yellow-colored grape bunch-shaped formations that form inside the nose.

The reasons for the formation of nasal polyps are not known exactly. Allergic upper respiratory tract diseases, fungal infections and some parts of bacteria (superantigens) are blamed in this regard. It may be associated with asthma and allergies to painkillers.

If you have complaints such as nasal congestion, smell disorder, runny nose, snoring, respiratory arrest during sleep, continuous nasal and postnasal drip, you may have a polyp in your nose. Sometimes your nasal polyps can grow so large that even you can see it from the outside.

When you go to the doctor with these complaints, your doctor will ask you detailed questions and investigate whether you have other diseases with the polyp. Polyps are usually seen in the frontal light examination of the nose.

However, in some cases, since the polyps do not grow very much, they are missed in the front light examination, but they can be seen in the examination with cameras called endoscopes.

Your doctor will ask you for a sinus tomography to evaluate the extent of polyps, the condition of your sinuses, and also to decide what to do in the surgery.

After it is determined that you have a nasal polyp, your doctor will first give you medication. Currently, the treatment of polyp is surgery. Medicines will be given to help shrink your polyps. Today, surgeries for nasal polyps are performed endoscopically (with thin telescopes). Nasal polyps tend to recur after surgery, especially if there are diseases such as asthma and aspirin allergy.
